What does Single Sign On (SSO) mean?

Single Sign-On (SSO), literally translated as “single sign-on”, means that a user only needs to log in once to access all portals, resources and services. for which he is authorized to access. This eliminates the need to use different credentials to access each of the systems and re-enter login authentication with each new session. In many cases, SSO is implemented alongside other system authentication modes such as smart cards or one-time passwords so that a user is not locked out of the system if they forget their username and password. It is also possible to reverse the SSO process, meaning that when a user logs out of an application, all other open systems are also closed.

Different Single Sign On (SSO) solutions

There are three main single sign-on solutions to suit your business needs:

Web Single Sign-On: Web Single Sign-On allows users to access a group of web servers that require authentication using a single application. Web SSO significantly reduces the risk of username loss, limiting the number of helpdesk requests for locked out users, who in turn no longer have to remember a large number of usernames and passwords for different web servers.

Federated Single Sign-On: Federated Single Sign-On relies on a trust relationship between an identity provider and a service provider to give users access to web services or applications. A federated SSO provides users with access to multiple enterprise applications by silently managing and mapping identities across multiple identity providers or domains. This is done through digital signatures, encryption or PKIs.

Enterprise single sign-on: Enterprise Single Sign On enables companies and organizations to centrally manage different company applications and portals for employees and customers, which means that all other authorized applications are automatically activated when you log in for the first time.

Advantages of Single Sign On (SSO) authentication

  • With SSO, a user can access multiple systems using the same credentials. The hassle of managing multiple passwords can be eliminated with Single Sign on Authentication.
  • If multiple complex software systems can be addressed with just a single login access code, it will be much easier for users to log in, ultimately leading to productive and efficient use of that software.
  • The SSO conditions correspond to the aspects of IT audit compliance.
  • Nearly 30% of help desk requests are related to credential resets. SSO therefore relieves the burden on support
  • SaaS license costs can be reduced
